Hi Everybody

Happy New Year. I hope that everybody who is on holiday is having a great break. For those who may be at work, then I hope that the start of your year has been productive.

This email list has been quiet for a long time. It was intended to be a place where there could be some online interaction, question asking, sharing etc. In addition, since mid 2006 there has been a blog set up to support the list.

As with many things, my postings to the blog became a bit sporadic, but it’s back in 2009 with some new content. Why not click the link below to have a look?

While you are there, you will have the chance to have your say about the name of the site. You’ll see a post on the site at http://pryorcommitment.com/lips2/?p=79 which explains the proposed change. Use the poll at the top right of the blog to say what you think.

The blog uses Wordpress as an engine. Wordpress is open-source and free, and easy to use. It has many useful possibilities and, with a bit of fiddling, can be customised to take on a number of different roles. For a few other examples, look at some of the links from the site below. You’ll see some links to some our ICT support spaces on the left.

Wordpress can also be used as an effective means of building an online presence for schools. A few examples can be seen from the link below. Don’t forget, though, that there is the rollout under way of the school website service.

We’ve also been having some fun with Collaborative Online Workspaces (COWs). Theses are secure spaces built using Sharepoint and they enable people with appropriate permissions to author and maintain content.

You can see how it looks at the link below. This will only be available from the DET network, and you’ll need to use the advice in the attached pdf file to gain access. If you get really keen and are interested in setting up access to this sort of space via the DET portal, (so that you can access 24/7 from anywhere in the world), then try the instructions for setting up a favourite in your Portal.
